Photobook Meet-up New York (Spaces Taken)

Although the spaces on this meetup organized by Joerg Colberg, Noah Kalina and Bryan Formhals went like, hot, hot, chocolate cakes, it’s great to see so many meetings start to take place around the world for the photo-bibliophiles. And so below you can read what they are planning, although this may only increase frustration at not being able to attend!

Here’s hoping more are organized in NY soon!

This past June, Bryan Formhals of LPV Magazine fame wrote an article about All the Photobooks I’ll Never See, which lead to an interesting Twitter conversation with me about photobook meetups. A few weeks ago, I emailed Bryan about organizing one. Since we both love the idea, we emailed ideas back and forth, and we ended up approaching Noah Kalina about hosting it at his studio. Noah agreed to doing it, so it’s on. Find all the details below. (more)

The pitch: There has never been a better time for the photobook. Hundreds, if not thousands, are currently made every year. How to keep up? How and where to see photobooks? This is where Photobook Meetup New York steps in: You pick a book – any book you want (but not one you made or produced) – and you bring it to the inaugural meetup, to briefly present it, talk about it. Five minutes, just you and the book (no fancy presentation, no projections or anything like that). Everybody else will simply listen, maybe ask questions, and look. If twenty people show up at the end of the night everybody will have seen 19 presentations of photobooks. Maybe you’ll know some of the books, but you might not know the different perspective or take you’ll hear. Maybe you have never heard of some of the books. Anything is possible. Photobook Meetup New York is about the photobook as much as it is about the community of people who love looking at and discovering new books.

The Photo Book Club World Map: An Update

We started the Photo Book Club World Map last Tuesday in an aim to create a comprehensive list of the best places to get your photobook fix – in physical stores.

Since then we have received hundreds of suggestions creating a map that currently comprises over 110 of the best stores, galleries and museum bookshops to browse and by photobooks and zines.

The Photo Book Club World Map

A huge thank you to all who have emailed, tweeted and posted their suggestions to this crowd-sourced resource as well as the PDN, Conscientious, Hey Mammoth and FlakPhoto who mentioned the project to their own followers. It was also great being able to utilise Andy Adams’ Flak Photo Network for the first time to get feedback from a 1700+ strong group of engaging photographers, educators and writers. To be able to tap into such a valuable community resulted in a much more complete picture of photobook stores around the world.

As mentioned above, the map currently stands at over 110 stores, but i’m sure there are many more: so please keep sending suggestions via email, twitter or in the comments section and they shall be added with a credit.
I have color coded stores in different parts of the world as well as using pins to represent highly concentrated areas, if you have any ideas on how we can improve usability – just let me know.

Now all that is left is for someone  generous  to send me on a world tour – stopping off at each store and buying a different photobook! I’ll even buy the books myself.
