World Photobook Day – October 14th

This coming October 14th World #PhotoBookDay will be celebrated! This date is a direct homage to the first known photobook: Photographs of British algae. Cyanotype impressions, by Anna Atkins. As the exact publishing date is unknown, we have taken the date that appears in the registry of the copy in British Library records.

Feel free to organise other activities for this day. We’d love you to join us in this celebration and contribute to make this date a global event by organising an action related to photobooks in your own city. As soon as you program your activity, please e-mail it to us, and we’ll post it in this website: photobookday.org.

This is the second year of this global event, in 2013 there were a nice collection of activities spread over many different countries, check them out on photobookday.org.

We know there is not much time to organise large activities, but we can propose easy actions you can take to celebrate locally this global event:

  • Post a #PhotoBookDaySelfie on social media: an image with you and your current favourite photobook.

  • Donate a self-published photobook or photozine to your nearest public library or school library. Where we can we will publish a list of public libraries accepting donations this day.

  • Buy a photobook. Many bookshops and publishers will make special discounts for the day. We’ll publish a list of them.

  • Check our map and locate your nearest activities and participate!

 Organise! Participate! Celebrate!

The World Photobook Day has been set up as a collaboration between the organizers of Photobook Club Madrid and Matt Johnston.

Celebrating the photobook, born in 1843.

Still Here

It has been too long since the last post here but house buying, summer breaks and the like have taken over a little.

There have been some wonderful additions to the Photobook Club’s Natural Collection which you can view by clicking the image below – and remember that if you want the collection to visit your University, school or community, you just need to get in touch.

The Natural Collection – New Additions

The box of dummies is now working it’s way around the world after initial events at Coventry, Murcia and Valencia.

The Box of Dummies in Valencia

And the original Box of Books is about to start it’s journey back home from Canada – there are things planned for it’s arrival which I will be posting soon.

In other news, Nathan Pearce’s ‘Midwest Dirt‘ edited by myself and brought to book-life by Akina books has sold out – a few copies available in book shops only now! While I will continue to work with Nathan on new works I am also interested to hear from other photographers who might wish to collaborate on a body of work – email matt@photobookclub.org

A Report from Brazil and Upcoming Event in Belfast

A report from Walter Costa from the PBC TRAMA in Brazil…

Here’s the post about our last session…. I’m sorry but it’s in Portuguese only!

It was like a series of short duels between two teams attacking or defending the books we previously drew among a selection of 2 titles per country… it was really interesting to see how the debate rose thanks to the duel scheme: people who normally are quite silent were “forced” to participate and added interesting considerations!

And notice of an event in Belfast next Tuesday at Belfast exposed can be found here….

Dragana Jurisic, who recently exhibited ‘Yu: The Lost Country’ at Belfast Exposed will present the next edition of Photobook Club Belfast on Tuesday 29 July. Jurisic will speak about the development of her publication of the same work, as well as exploring other publications that have inspired and influenced her practice. This event is free and all are welcome.

PBC Coventry Meets PBC Paris in London next Saturday!

Next Saturday (14th), as part of the Straybooks festival organised by Akina books, I will be heading in to London to host a wee event with Emilie Hallard of the Photobook Club Paris. The event will start at 4pm and will be a relaxed affair in which we try to better understand the state of photobook culture by picking examples for discussion direct from the exhibition (though you can feel free to bring your own books too).

Although folks can drop in as they like, we plan to start with a group of 10-12 people so please let me know if you want to attend.

Details regarding location etc can be found here.

The Box of Dummies is Ready to Ship

The Box of Dummies which was formed last year during the ‘Le Photobook Fest’ dummy award, is now ready to ship! The box features 12 awesome dummy photobooks which I hope will make their way to a whole bunch of different events around the world.

While I have already received some locations for stops, it would be great to have all interest expressed here so that the most efficient route for the books can be worked out. As before the only cost involved is in paying for the postage from the book’s previous destination. If you are interested – pop me an email matt@photobookclub.org.

You can check out all the books by heading to the dedicated site – www.boxofbooks.photobookclub.org

Midwest Dirt by Nathan Pearce

Now it’s just after harvest time, my favorite time of year. The fields are almost cleared and I’m barefoot on my porch with a beer in my hand. I can see for miles.

For over a year now I have been working with Nathan to bring this fantastic project into corporeal existence and with the aid of Akina Factory who who created the book concept and design, the result is beautiful.

One of the toughest elements of editing this work is something Nathan has pointed out in a recent interview with Darwin Magazine – how the projects needed to move away from cliched depictions of the rural midwest but at the same time not disown culture and environment. While the geographical location rooted in the midwest, this project for me has always been about home, about home as a constant for good and bad. For this reason I hope it appeals to many.

If you are interested in buying the book you can head here.

Great to hear recently from Jose Carlos Robles of the Photobook Club Alicante in Spain…

I’m delighted to tell you that we are running this month our sixth meeting, great news for us.

We are very happy because the Contemporary Museum of Art in Alicante is nowadays supporting us, offering their public library to celebrate our sessions. The Museum has a great collection itself and we are very proud to collaborate with them.

I send you some photos of the last event at the Museum.

Here  is the link with news of our next session and another one from the Museum itself.

You can see here the page were the Museum makes a little comment about the Photobook Club.
