Photobook Club Tokyo: meetup #3

Great news from Yoshikatsu Fujii who organizes the Photobook Club Tokyo:

Hi! Matt,

We have only two weeks before our next (and 3rd) meetup that we will hold in Tokyo on Mar. 9. 2013.

I’m pleased that Twelvebooks and Tokyo Institute of   photography (TIP) have offered to support us. Twelvebooks is a photobooks distributor in Japan and they have offered the latest MACK books to this meetup!

TIP is the center of photography in Japan and also publish the photo magazine “PHaT PHOTO“. They have assured us that they can help by lending a meeting place for future events.

As we are cooperating with each other on the meetup we will discuss the MACK books at TIP and We will invite a PHaT PHOTO’s chief editor to the meetup.

We are really pleased  that we have meet with a lot of response to our movement and we should not only hold meetup in Tokyo, but also another city in the near future.

The Photobook Club Madrid and the Chapbook

Great idea from the folks that run the Photobook Club Madrid that all can get involved in, even those part of other branches or simply following along on their own.
Don’t know what a chapbook is?

Over to Boni:

Hi there!

Maybe you noticed through facebook we are celebrating first year of PhotoBook Club Madrid activities with an open call to everyone who wants to join us next 28th bringing a chapbook made on theirselves, for the occasion, just for fun.

We are inviting everyone, even non attending people to send us their chapbook by mail, and we were thinking to broaden this open call to other photobook clubs in order to send us a .pdf which we can print locally, sending us some explanations about the project or contacting us via g+ so authors can explain live what they did with their chapbook, or just saying hi, greetings, whatever.

The meet-up will be at BlankPaper Escuela, a school of photography in Malasaña area, and there we will discuss the chapbooks we bring as in any ordinary meet-up we do with books. We will take note of any comment from the rest of participants in order to send a feedback for everyones chapbooks.

So, hoping it’s not too late and you like to participate send us your chapbook in a .pdf ready to print or your doubts to photobookclubmadrid@hotmail.com or in facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/PhotoBookClubMADrid

Deadline: 25th February

cheers,
boni

The Photobook Club’s ‘Box of Books’ Launch

What’s a launch without a launch video? In this one I do my best impression of Tommy Cooper’s bottle routine. Thanks to all who have helped make this a reality and for all the enthusiastic Photobook Club branches who are eager to get their hands on it…

Photobook Club badge for anyone who correctly guesses how many times the word ‘book’ or ‘box’ is used (answers on the back of a postcard).

The Photobook Club’s ‘Box of Books’ Launched in Coventry

Last night I launched the Photobook Club’s ‘Box of Books’ at a special event with the Photobook Club Coventry. The books were all really well received and prompted some great discussions. While these meetups remain as offline, generative experiences I thought I would share a few of the discussions around particular books for other branches to pick up…

We discussed (among other things):

  • Whether the books was the right medium for Paul Graham’s ‘The Present’. I argued for but many who were seeing it for the first time argued against.
  • What exactly is the other language in Marten Lange’s ‘Another Language’, and does it ultimately matter or change our reading of the work?
  • How the text accompanying Filipe Casaca’s ‘Blue Mud Swamp’ works with the images. Whether the beauty of the physical book is a comparison with the city in the text before we head into the apocalyptic content.
  • The connection between Granddaughter and Grandmother in ‘Mrs Merryman’s Collection’, in general we wanted to know much more about the original collection and the taste of Mrs Merryman.
  • Who is being trapped in Ron Jude’s ‘Lick Creek Line’?
  • How the photographers presence may or may not have altered suspects and interrogators behavior in Donal Webber’s ‘Interrogations’. We hoped but doubted that the photographer may be of some comfort to the suspects!

On a personal note I found that with books I own and have already formed opinions on, it was much harder to take a step back and take on board some fantastic alternative readings from members.

You can see more images of the event on the ‘Box of Books’ Facebook page found here.

The Photobook Club Bangalore

The Photobook Club Bangalore operates a little differently to some of the other branches, but at the heart of this club, like all, is the promotion of access to, and discussion of photobooks…

Where and when does this club meet?
This is not a formal club. We (Mahesh Shantaram and Vidya Rao) have collected many photobooks over the last few years. We thought it would be great if we could share it with others who might be interested and develop the photo book culture here in India starting from our city, Bangalore.

All the photo books are from our private collection and are housed in our living room/library. So we open up our house on select Sundays afternoons every month for interested people to come by and browse the books.

I’d like to join in, when is the next meeting and what do I do?
If you are interested please join “Mahesh and Vidya’s Photo Book Library” group on facebook. We announce photo book open house dates here.

Unlike other photobook clubs, we do not decide what books we are going to discuss, etc. beforehand. Photo book enthusiasts show up at our house on Open House days, pick a book they like and go through it, discuss it, and so on. If someone does not know where to begin, we will help them depending on their personal interests.

Here are our contact details:
