World Photobook Day – October 14th

This coming October 14th World #PhotoBookDay will be celebrated! This date is a direct homage to the first known photobook: Photographs of British algae. Cyanotype impressions, by Anna Atkins. As the exact publishing date is unknown, we have taken the date that appears in the registry of the copy in British Library records.

Feel free to organise other activities for this day. We’d love you to join us in this celebration and contribute to make this date a global event by organising an action related to photobooks in your own city. As soon as you program your activity, please e-mail it to us, and we’ll post it in this website: photobookday.org.

This is the second year of this global event, in 2013 there were a nice collection of activities spread over many different countries, check them out on photobookday.org.

We know there is not much time to organise large activities, but we can propose easy actions you can take to celebrate locally this global event:

  • Post a #PhotoBookDaySelfie on social media: an image with you and your current favourite photobook.

  • Donate a self-published photobook or photozine to your nearest public library or school library. Where we can we will publish a list of public libraries accepting donations this day.

  • Buy a photobook. Many bookshops and publishers will make special discounts for the day. We’ll publish a list of them.

  • Check our map and locate your nearest activities and participate!

 Organise! Participate! Celebrate!

The World Photobook Day has been set up as a collaboration between the organizers of Photobook Club Madrid and Matt Johnston.

Cosecha 2013 – Bring/send your dummies!

News from Juan Cires of the Photobook Club Madrid that they will be holding a meeting on July 23rd inviting artists to present their photobook dummies – and if you cant make it, you can send via post – think I will get onto this myself! More…

Hi from the Photobook Club Madrid. We are organizing a new activity called Cosecha 2013 (Harvest 2013) with the Ivorypress bookstore. We will have a meeting of photobook artists on July 23rd to show bookdummies created this year. We will also have an exhibition at Ivorypress in September of the participating dummies. The event is open.

Ideally, the dummies should be presented in person by the author, but if anyone wants to participate but can’t make it to Madrid on July 23rd, it is possible to submit book dummies by post. Please e-mail info@photobookclubmadrid.com for instructions.

Thanks,

Juan.

The Photobook Club Sau Paulo and the box of books hits Madrid…

The Photobook Club Sau Paulo has launched this week, run by Silmara Pires the group can be found and contacted via their website and also on their Facebook page here. There will be more news from this branch as and when the first event is set up but for now, if you are in the area and interested in attending or contributing, let Silmara know.

In other news, the box of books arrived in Madrid this week and was poured over by a great community of photobook lovers. Text and images Juan Cires / Cuatro Cuerpos / Photobook Club Madrid

We spent time carefully reading the books individually or in small groups and in the end we made a pooling of our detailed comments book to book. None left us indifferent, all provoked discussion, and even fell in love with someone.

At the end deliver the box to the Photobook Club Toledo, next stage, and we had a wonderful dessert with apple pie and a box of biscuits, well watered with a few bottles of wine, sweet fitting end to this phase of the exciting journey.

If all this talk of photobook meetups has made you want your own to attend. Pop me an email as there may be others in the area thinking the same thing.

Yesterday was the third gathering of photography books in the Royal Photographic Society in Madrid, where we spent some time talking about books and commenting on the stories of a recent workshop with Gerhard Steidl. The books involved were:

  • Elliott Erwitt, EE 60/60, National Museum Reina Sofia Art Center, 2001
  • U.S. Camera 1944. The USA at War, Duell, Sloan & Pearce, 1944
  • Origin, edited by Bleda and Rosa, Regional Museum of Garrotxa, 2006
  • Laura Terre, Paco Gomez, RM / Photo Colectania Foundation, 2010
  • Alfonso, Corners of Old Madrid (night), Graphic Arts Martorell, 1951
  • Joan Colom, Raval, Steidl, 2006
  • Paul Fusco, RFK, Aperture, 2008
  • Carlos Perez Siquier, the knowing look, Royal Photographic Society, 2002

As you can see there has been a variety of proposals, focusing on photography more classical Spanish and American photography and works that range from the conceptual to the Bleda and Rosa Alfonso seen almost pictorialists. Much to say. We hope to see you again next month.

  • U.S. Camera 1944.  The U.S.A. at War, Duell, Sloan & Pearce, 1944
  • Joan Colom, Raval, Steidl, 2006
  • Paul Fusco, RFK, Aperture, 2008

The Photo Book Club Madrid is born!

The Photo Book Club Madrid held their inaugural meeting this Tuesday at Real Sociedad Fotográfica in Madrid. By all accounts the event was very popular and from speaking with Bonifacio Barrio Hijosa who was in attendance, it seems the group will aim to meet next on march 27th, and from then on, every last Tuesday of the month.

If you are interested in attending any future events run by the Photo Book Club Madrid, head on over to their facebook page for more information, and as a teaser, here is a peak at the club meet-up last night.
